Today, for the first time in my entire life, I have intentionally applied lipstick to my arm. Don't get me wrong, I've definitely managed to end up with it on my arm before - if you've never accidentally wiped your face with the back of your arm while wearing lipstick then, frankly, you're a better girl than I am - but I've never actually meant for it to be there.
Today is different. Today is the day that I tackle my ultimate nemesis. Today is the day that I write a beauty post complete with an actual product review!
Let's just all take a moment to have a nice rejuvenating cup of tea and recover from the shock of that statement, shall we?
NYX liquid lipsticks
Admittedly I may be the last blogger, possibly even the last woman, in the world to jump on this bandwagon, but I have finally bought some products from NYX. I honest to God stood at the counter for about half an hour, painting so many different shades on the back of my hand I ended up looking like a hyper child who broke into the secret stash of poster paint.
In the end, I picked one of the Soft Matte Lip Creams that everybody's lost their mind over, and then decided to try a Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick to compare it with, as I haven't really heard anything about those before and wanted to see how the two compared.
Whilst I'd obviously love you to read this post in full it is pretty long, so if you're short on time I've included a comparison chart at the bottom (just underneath the swatches) for quick reference!
Right, let's start with the Blogosphere's fave, shall we? After a lot of shade-deliberation, I decided to go for a fairly neutral Soft Matte shade, as I don't have many 'every-day' lip colours compared to my brights collection. This is San Paolo (shade 08), which is described as a "plummy-pink." The colour of the cream is fairly true to the tube, though I would say it's possibly a slightly richer shade on application.
Now, one thing I'm going to rave about here is OH MY GOD this lipstick smells absolutely incredible - I don't even know how to describe it, but it's amazing, and I don't think I've really seen other people say that before? Though I'm sure they must have... I know you don't tend to buy lipsticks, or any makeup, for that matter, because of their scent, but it always makes me love products even more if they smell great too.
The best thing about the NYX soft matte lip cream, though, is definitely its texture. Whilst it is matte, it's fairly velvety and not drying at all. The texture actually reminds me a lot of the Bourjours Rouge Velvet lipsticks, which I really liked but never really got as much coverage as I wanted. The NYX products have a much fuller coverage and richer pigmentation, so that's brilliant, and they really do feel so soft that it's almost like you're not wearing any lipstick. Almost.
One thing that I wasn't blown away with, however, was the staying power. I feel like every other review I've read says that the soft matte lip cream DOES NOT come off and, for me at least, that wasn't completely true. Whilst they do stay on pretty well, and the pigment lasts a long time, you do get some colour transfer if you eat and drink, as you can see below - I was having a nice little cup of tea whilst taking these photos and you can see that Lionel got a little bit of a pink halo into the bargain. I'm sure he was down with it, though.
In fairness, I do think that's probably unavoidable with a product that feels so lightweight and non-drying. The liquid lipsticks I've used with the best staying-power (like MAC) are undeniably drying, and don't feel as comfortable or 'natural' on your lips.
First things first, it doesn't smell the same as the Soft Matte, which is heartbreaking, but I am absolutely in love with this shade. I picked Cherry Skies (03), which is described a 'deep wine red' and looks like a really vampy dark berry stain. Gorgeous.
The colour payoff with this is far, far more intense than the soft matte (though do bear in mind that I've tried a much more intense shade here and that could account for some of the difference) and seemed to have much more pigment to it. The lipstick also definitely lasts longer, as it almost stains your lips underneath the lipstick so, whilst you do get some transfer, you keep a shade or 'tint' for hours and hours, to the point that you probably need makeup remover to get it all off.
Finish-wise, Liquid Suede doesn't seem to dry to quite the same matte finish as the Soft Matte and stays quite tacky for a long time. The finish is, unsurprisingly, more suede-like than a true waxy matte and so I was a little concerned that I'd end up with it across my face, but thankfully it really did stay put pretty well and the only transfer I got was, again, eating and drinking rather than smudging.
Whilst it didn't feel as natural and easy to wear as the Soft Matte, the Liquid Suede lipstick still wasn't particularly drying for a liquid lipstick (again, sorry MAC, you last forever and I love you but you'd dry out a mermaid's lips). Not as easy to wear as Soft Matte, perhaps, but by no means the most tricky!
As you can see, I've come out on the side of the Soft Matte Lip Cream. In all honesty I've found it really difficult to decide between the two products as they're both pretty great, and they have such different qualities. The reason I've had to put the Soft Matte first, though, is basically the texture. I've never used a lip product that feels so light and gives good coverage without being at all 'slimy' or greasy, and of course the scent is wonderful. I'd probably wear it as perfume.
I can definitely see myself using both of these products regularly, and I'd say it's worth buying both, if you're open-minded, because they are really different and are suited to different occasions and moods.
I really hope you enjoyed this post - I wanted to try to branch out and add something new into the mix, as I've written about beauty products before but not for a while, and I've never actually tackled a proper review with the dreaded swatches before!
Please, please please leave me a comment and let me know what you think - I'd love to know if you'd like to see more posts like this from me in the future! Also, gimme a holla on twitter or something, I'm always there and I'm always looking for more people to stalk. In a nice way.
Okay, I'm going now, I've got to try and a huge red stain of my arm. I may be in the bath for the foreseeable future as I've tried to wash it off three times already... wish me luck! Loves xx
