Awkward confession time.
I haven't worn any style of jeans other than skinny for nearly 10 years.
When they came into fashion, I was a bit scared of them because, if I'm perfectly honest, I'd been a bit of a chunky teenager and just couldn't see them doing me any favours. I was scared that I'd look like too much sausage meat stuffed into too-small a casing, and nobody wants that.
Then one day I picked up a pair to try on and bam, that's it. Welcome to a 10-year long style rut. Before that, I was a huge fan of bootcut jeans and even dabbled with a couple of wide-leg versions, so skin-tight was a big change for me, but I liked it. I felt comfortable and, shockingly, my thighs didn't suddenly look eight times the size they did in other styles.
Since then, I've studiously ignored pretty much every trend going in the denim world. I've eschewed flares, the return of the bootcut, boyfriend and straight cut without giving them a second thought.
Then the other day, when I noticed that my current favourite jeans are starting to look a little thin and like there might be an awkward exposure incident in my not too distant future, I stopped and thought, hang on, why am I ignoring all these other possibilities? And then I realised. I'm ashamed to say it's because I've actually forgotten how to wear any other kind of jeans. I'm not an idiot, I understand that you still put them on in the same way, but errm what should I wear them with? And will they actually suit me?
I love the look of boyfriend jeans and mom jeans, but am I alone in worrying that if you're not an actual model they'll make you look like a baby elephant? Which is so dumb. I've seen so many pictures of girls looking high-five fab in them, girls who look like real life women who'd come out for afternoon tea with you and be fun and cool enough to eat all the cake. And yet. I can't seem to stop thinking that they'll look ridiculous on me.
I've literally gone full circle in a decade. Before, I was scared of skinny jeans and now I'm scared of everything but. What is wrong with me?!
So here we have some contenders! For the sake of comparison I've gone Topshop all the way because, a) I like their skinny jeans and b) they're pretty much the only brand of jeans I've found that seem to fit me properly. Go figure.
On the left, we have Topshop's Ripped Lucas Jeans, which look fairly fab in this pic and also in the photos of the model on the website. But then she's a model. She's meant to look good in clothes, it is quite literally her job.
Anyway, they're a nice slim fit and I actually really like the ripped details, which is odd for me as I normally hate ripped jeans... I just can't help feeling like they'll be the sort of jeans that are loose on me through the leg, but from about mid-thigh upwards it'd all go horribly wrong?
In the middle, we have my current go-to gal: Topshop's Joni jeans. Stretchy, comfy and super-duper skinny, they suck you in like granny pants. But then you can't really eat anything without feeling like you're being sawn in half for the rest of the day unless you unbutton the waist. And let's not pretend that we haven't all been there.
They actually look pretty awful when they're not on, don't they? I've also been thinking about trying a pair of Asos' Ridley jeans because they're cheaper, I hear good things and they come in about a zillion different colours. But then I do like to try before I buy...
And finally! Topshop's Pretty Blue Mom Jeans. I didn't even make that up, that's literally what they're called on the website. And I die, they look so fab. It's like being back in the '80s. I want to wear spandex and crop tops and watch Fame (for the record, I should tell you I've never actually seen Fame, but it seemed like an appropriate pop-cultural reference to throw in). They're a baggier fit than the boyfriend jeans, and they're high-waisted which I love. But maybe there's a possibility of a baggy crotch situation?
I think I'm probably leaning towards the mom jeans, to be honest, which surprises me. I was pretty sure I'd get to the end of this and decide actually naah, I'll stick with the skinnies. But ten years seems like a long time to be stuck in a style rut, and maybe it's time to challenge myself and mix things up a little.
Which style of jeans are your faves at the moment, and how are you styling it out? I'd love to hear some feedback... literally any help at all would be great here!
Hope you've all managed the sucky first day back from the Bank Holiday weekend - I prayed for an extra day but it seems like the universe was against us. Bummer.
