If you've been around here at all recently, you may have noticed that I've had my little stress head on. Life's been pretty full on. And while it's super exciting, it can also get a bit overwhelming and has left me feeling a little drained.
SO. I thought I'd share with you some of the little things in life that cheer me up when times get a bit tough...
1. Tea and Coffee
Sometimes I think there is honestly nothing better in our little world that a good, hot cup of caffeine. Yeah yeah, it's not good for you, but it's a great little pick me up. Sorta like a hug from the inside out, especially when it's not hot outside - WHEN will it be hot outside?! Before Christmas sometime, maybe?
This one's obvious. Nearly everybody loves a cuddle from time to time. I'm a big fan, and I pride myself on giving pretty darn good hugs - none of this arm's-length nonsense. Some clever sciencey types have proven that close body contact can make us happier, less anxious and improve relationships. There are also reports that it could help us sleep better and even strengthen our immune systems. Need any more convincing?
Okay, I'm a geek, I admit it. I like to do puzzles. But this whole mindfulness thing has kicked off hugely, and colouring in is cool again, so I'm making the case for Sudoku. It has basically the same effect as colouring in, because you can't worry about whatever was on your mind when you're trying to figure out how you've accidentally put two 3s in that row. Plus, if you're on the move this is even better as you don't have to cart around a tonne of coloured pens or pencils. One pencil, all you need.
Do I really need to say anything else about this one? Thought not.
It sounds like such a cliche but a nice bright lipstick really perks me up. I'm a matte girl, no sheer shiny stuff for me thanks, and I've got a collection so big I'm not sure that I can actually carry it any more. But they make me happy, so they stay. My current faves are Sephora Color Lip Last in Burgundy Spirit, Topshop Matte Lipstick in Bookworm and MAC Retro Matte in Relentlessly Red. Do it.
No word of a lie, I think I could spend an entire week on Pinterest without ever getting bored. It soothes me. It's like making a huge picture scrapbook without any of the mess or ever running out of pretty things. Whatever you want, it's there, whether you're looking for some street style inspo, home hacks or some new blogs to read. Mine's really pretty. If you're on there we should definitely be Pin friends, and if you're not you should be!
Because I'm away so much of the time I hardly ever get to see my friends. Hell, even catching them on the phone can be a nightmare! But the thing I love the most about my crazy little bunch is that they understand, and they still want to be my friend when I do come back.
I haven't seen my best friend in SIXTEEN months, and I hadn't actually spoken to her for at least six months. I realise this makes me sound like a hideous person, but she's been off doing her thing in New York and I've been, well, pretty much everywhere else. When I finally spoke to her last week it was like we'd never been apart and, actually, nothing had really changed. Apart from maybe she's got cooler.
The best of friends are always there when you need them, no matter how long it's been. But sometimes you've gotta pick up the phone or send them a quick message just to let them know you're still there for them too.
There are few greater pleasures in life than a long, hot bath. Grab a stack of cheesy magazines, stick on some music, pour yourself a glass of wine and settle in for some relaxation time. I like to use about half a bottle of bubble bath too, but I guess that one's up to you.
Stop rushing for a minute and take a long hard look at the world around you. Our planet is so breathtakingly beautiful when you actually take the time to appreciate it. Glorious sunsets, blossoms on trees, birds flying, waves crashing up the beach... wherever you are, there's something there to help you see the bigger picture.
Why is it that when you're little bedtime seems like a punishment? Getting ready for bed is now one of my outright fave times of day. And sleep is so good. I like to sit and write out all the crap that's on my mind before I snuggle in, then I can drift off knowing that I can't forget anything important in the morning. Nine times out of ten, it doesn't seem so bad when you wake up anyway.
And there we are! Granted, it's nothing truly groundbreaking, but when I'm a stressy-pants I seem to forget all these things, so it's handy to have them written down!
What makes it onto your list? Leave me a comment and let me know! Love x
